Persona skill

Leadership

Leadership is how you set direction, give people the context to act and follow through on what was decided.

What it looks like at work

  • Naming the goal and the principle behind a decision before asking for agreement
  • Making a call when a decision has been waiting too long
  • Giving each person the context they need to act without you
  • Following up on what was agreed, kindly and on time

When it shows up often

When it shows up often in your answers, you may step in to decide and organise without being asked, which can unblock a group quickly. Watch for deciding too much yourself: the people around you need room to make calls too.

When it shows up less

When it shows up less, you may prefer to contribute without steering. Many people lead best from there, by example and by expertise. When a group stalls, though, someone has to name the direction, and it can be you.

Self-insight, not a diagnosis or a hiring decision.

Ways to practise it

  1. Before you next ask a group for agreement, say the principle the decision rests on, then the decision itself.
  2. Turn one goal into a visible checklist with an owner, a date, the main blocker and what will show it is done.
  3. Run one check-in with your team about context, blockers, ownership and the support each person needs.

Tests that look at it

A test's pattern feeds this skill when its name, or failing that its description, uses words such as leadership, leader, influence, founder, operator or decision.

Growth lenses that lean on it

Growth lenses group skills for a direction you might grow in. They are lenses for growth, not a judgement of job fit.

  • Founder OperatorAlso leans on execution and analytical thinking.

Questions

Do I need to manage people to show leadership?

No. Persona looks at habits such as setting direction, influencing decisions and following through, which show up in any role. A founder, a team lead and a colleague who organises a project can all show them.

Does a strong leadership signal mean I should be a manager?

Not on its own. It shows how often leadership habits show up in your answers. Whether a role suits you depends on much more than one skill signal, and Persona never makes that call.

Other skills

  • Analytical thinking

Analytical thinking is how you break a problem into parts, weigh the evidence and reach a decision you can explain.

  • Communication

Communication is how clearly you get your meaning across, how well you take in what others mean and how you adjust to the person in front of you.

  • Collaboration

Collaboration is how you work with others toward a shared result: sharing context, keeping commitments visible and repairing friction when it appears.

  • Learning agility

Learning agility is how readily you learn from new situations, try new approaches and change course when something is not working.

  • Self-regulation

Self-regulation, at work, is how you protect your attention and recover from pressure before it turns into rushed work or avoidable mistakes.

  • Execution

Execution is how you turn a plan into visible action: a clear next step, an owner and a deadline, carried through to done.
