How we choose the sites on this list
- Every entry is a real, working website. Where a sign-up page could not be opened directly, the steps start from the home page.
- No paid link schemes, link farms or networks built to sell links. Those can get a site penalised.
- A link is marked followed or nofollow only when the site says so or a live listing shows it; otherwise it says unverified.
- Costs, requirements and catches are written plainly. When a price comes from reports rather than the site itself, the note says so.
Backlink questions
What is a backlink?
A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Search engines read links as a sign that other people find a site useful, and visitors use them to find you.
What is the difference between dofollow and nofollow?
A followed (dofollow) link can pass ranking value; a nofollow link asks search engines not to. Nofollow links still bring visitors and help show a business is real, so both are worth having from relevant sites.
Are free backlinks still worth it?
Yes, when they are relevant and real: business listings, review profiles, communities and showcases that people actually use. Avoid any site that sells links or lists anything for a fee.
How many backlinks does a new website need?
There is no fixed number. A few dozen relevant listings and a handful of links from real articles do more than hundreds of links from unrelated directories.
Can submitting to directories hurt my site?
Listing a real business on reputable directories is safe. Risk comes from buying links, joining link exchanges, or submitting to directories that accept everything.
