CO2 emissions calculator for fleets

Work out the kilograms of CO2 from the diesel, petrol, CNG, auto LPG or electricity your vehicles use, from the fuel itself or from distance and mileage. The emission factor, its unit and its published source sit beside the answer.

Breakdown

How it is worked out

Fuels use the greenhouse gas conversion factors published by the UK government (DESNZ) for 2026. Electricity uses the average for India’s grid from the Central Electricity Authority’s CO2 Baseline Database for the Indian Power Sector, Version 22.0, August 2026, data for FY 2025-26.

Fuel used (L, kg or kWh)
= the fuel or electricity used, or distance ÷ mileage
CO2 (kg)
= fuel used × emission factor (kg of CO2 per L, kg or kWh)
CO2 per km (kg)
= CO2 ÷ distance
CO2 per delivery (kg)
= CO2 ÷ deliveries

What it leaves out

A calculator answers the question it is given. These are the things to add, or check, yourself.

  • Methane and nitrous oxide from burning the fuel. The same conversion factors put them at 1.3% on top of the CO2 of diesel, counted as CO2 equivalent (CO2e).
  • Emissions from producing the fuel and bringing it to the pump (well to tank), and from building the vehicle.
  • Biofuel blends: the petrol and diesel factors are for fuel with no ethanol or biodiesel. A blended fuel puts out less fossil CO2 per litre.
  • For electric vehicles: charger and transmission losses, and power from your own solar panels. The factor is the average of all grid electricity in India over one year.

Questions

How much CO2 does a litre of diesel produce?

2.62818 kg of CO2 per litre, for diesel with no biodiesel, in the conversion factors published by the UK government (DESNZ) for 2026. Multiply the litres used by this factor.

What emission factor is used for electric vehicles?

The weighted average emission factor of India’s grid: 0.675 kg of CO2 per kWh, from the Central Electricity Authority’s CO2 Baseline Database for the Indian Power Sector, Version 22.0, August 2026, data for FY 2025-26. Multiply the kWh charged by it.

Why do the fuel factors come from the UK government?

They are published every year with their method, and list the CO2 of each fuel per litre or per kg, apart from the other gases. The grid factor comes from India’s Central Electricity Authority. Every answer names its factor and source, so you can check it against the factor your reporting uses.

Is CO2 the same as CO2e?

No. CO2e also counts other greenhouse gases as the CO2 that would warm as much. For burning fuel the difference is small; this calculator reports CO2, and this page says how much the other gases add.
