Breakdown

How it is worked out

Five lines, the same for diesel, petrol, CNG, auto LPG and electric vehicles. Only the units change: litres, kg or kWh.

Trip distance (km)
= one-way distance × 2 for a round trip, or × 1 one way
Fuel used (L, kg or kWh)
= trip distance ÷ mileage (km per L, kg or kWh)
Fuel cost (₹)
= fuel used × price per L, kg or kWh
Trip cost (₹)
= fuel cost + tolls and parking
Cost per km (₹)
= trip cost ÷ trip distance

What it leaves out

A calculator answers the question it is given. These are the things to add, or check, yourself.

  • How traffic, idling, air conditioning and the load change mileage. Enter the mileage your vehicle gets on these trips, not the brochure figure.
  • Driver pay, the vehicle’s EMI or rent, maintenance and overhead. The cost per delivery calculator adds those up for a whole day.
  • Toll rates by plaza and vehicle class. Enter the total you expect to pay for the trip.
  • Charging losses of electric vehicles. Use the kWh your charger or bill shows over a known distance to get the range per kWh.

Questions

How do you work out the fuel cost of a delivery trip?

Divide the trip distance by the vehicle’s mileage to get the fuel used, multiply that by the price you pay per litre (per kg for CNG, per kWh for an electric vehicle), then add tolls and parking. The calculator shows each step with your numbers.

What mileage should I enter?

The mileage your vehicle gets on these trips, from your own records: kilometres driven divided by the fuel bought between two full tanks. Brochure figures are measured in test conditions, so a loaded vehicle in traffic can get less.

Does it work for CNG and electric vehicles?

Yes. Pick CNG to enter km per kg and the price per kg, or Electric to enter the range per kWh and the price per kWh you pay to charge. The maths is the same; only the units change.

Is the cost per km the full cost of running the vehicle?

No. It covers fuel, tolls and parking for this trip only. Driver pay, the vehicle’s EMI or rent, maintenance and overhead are in the cost per delivery calculator.
