Help with a screen, consent first.

Staff and students share a screen or window from their browser when they ask for help. They allow each session, and you can show afterwards who helped whom.

Where it fits.

  • Consent firstWith the default policy, the person sharing allows each session and can stop at any time.
  • Lab and staff computersAnything with a desktop browser works: lab computers, staff laptops, library machines.
  • One window at a timeAsk people to share a single window, so the rest of their screen stays theirs.

How a session runs for you.

Three steps from a request to a solved problem, with the person in charge of their own screen.

  1. Someone asks for help

A student or a member of staff raises a request or calls the help desk.

  2. They join with a code

They open the join page on their computer and type the 9-digit code.

  3. Guide, then close

Watch the shared window, explain in the chat and end the session when it is solved.

Good for, and not for.

Good for

  • Lab and classroom computer help
  • Walking staff through a new tool
  • Help desks that log every session

Not a fit for

  • Watching screens through screen sharing without the person asking: every screen is shared on purpose
  • Phones and tablets: sharing needs a desktop browser
  • Using lab computers’ screens from a distance: screen sessions are view-only

Settings to start with.

A starting point, not a rule: every setting can change per workspace.

Your questions, answered.

Can a teacher see a student’s screen without asking?

Not through screen sharing: a screen is shared only when the person opens the join page, types the code and chooses what to share, and they can stop at any time. On lab computers that run the optional device agent, an approved terminal session runs commands as the signed-in user and can reach what that account can, so give operator access there only to staff who may.

Do students need an account?

No. They need the code and a desktop browser.

Can staff help from home?

Yes, if both sides have a browser and a network that allows the connection. Run the screen share check on both computers first.
