How it is worked out
Rule 138 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017, with its amendments up to the notifications listed under sources.
- Needs a bill (between states)
- = consignment value, with GST and cess, of more than ₹50,000
- Validity (days)
- = distance ÷ 200 km, rounded up; ÷ 20 km for over dimensional cargo or a multimodal shipment with a leg by ship
- Last valid day
- = date the vehicle details (Part B) are first entered + validity in days; the bill runs out at midnight at the end of that day
The portal counts validity from the first time the vehicle details (Part B) are entered. In its own example, a bill generated at 00:04 on 14 March has a first day that ends at midnight between 15 and 16 March.
Worked example
The example values the calculator opens with, worked through step by step. Validity: 2 days.

| Days of validity | 310 km ÷ 200 km per day, rounded up | 2 days |
What it leaves out
A calculator answers the question it is given. These are the things to add, or check, yourself.
- Movement within one state: each state and union territory sets its own value limit in its own rules. Check yours.
- Goods and movements that need no bill whatever their value, listed in rule 138(14), such as goods carried in a non-motorised conveyance and empty cargo containers.
- Movements that need a bill at any value: goods sent to a job worker in another state, and handicraft goods moved between states by a person exempt from registration.
- Extending a bill: when goods cannot arrive in time for reasons such as an accident or trans-shipment, the transporter can extend it on the portal, within 8 hours of it running out.
- Penalties, and the tax due on the goods.
Questions
How long is an e-way bill valid?
One day for up to 200 km, and one more day for every further 200 km or part of it. For over dimensional cargo, or a multimodal shipment with a leg by ship, it is one day for every 20 km or part of it. Each day ends at midnight.
When is an e-way bill needed?
Rule 138 of the CGST Rules asks for one when a registered person moves goods of a consignment value of more than ₹50,000, counting GST and cess. For movement within one state, that state’s own limit applies, and some goods and movements are exempt.
Can an e-way bill be extended?
Yes, by the transporter on the e-way bill portal, when goods cannot reach in time for reasons such as an accident, a natural calamity or trans-shipment. The rule allows it within 8 hours of the bill running out.
Is this calculator’s answer official?
No. It is a guide to the rule as amended by the notifications listed on this page. Generate bills and check their validity on the official e-way bill portal, and check the current rule before you rely on a figure.
